In just over 3 weeks I will be leaving Canada, (my visa is expiring) and i’m feeling a little bit of stress. I have a fairly long to do list before I leave and I have not yet checked 1 item off. I don’t know why I haven’t started doing anything. I just haven’t. So naturally instead of making some inroads on the list, I will just write about it.
Here it is
Plane Tickets
I have not purchased any plane tickets yet to my next destination. Mainly because, up until recently I wasn’t entirely sure when I would be leaving, but now I do, so there are no excuses. Before heading to London, I am planning on making a small detour to San Jose, California. I have relatives there who are eager for me to come and meet them, for the very first time. Up until 2 years ago we did not live in the same continent, so with me leaving soon, who knows when I will get another chance. This means that instead of buying a simple ticket from Toronto to London, I now need to organise a flight to San Jose and then onwards to London from there.
Purchase a New Backpack
I decided to bring a suitcase with me to Toronto, because I knew there would be less moving around while I was here. Whenever I did travel, I simply took a smaller bag with me. Now it’s time to go back to the backpack as I return to a more unpredictable style of travel. It’s about time.
After 2 years of living in Canada, I probably have twice the amount of clothes than I came with. I obviously can’t take everything. I need to figure out what I am keeping and what i’m donating.
Visa Application
My first stop in Europe is London, so I can visit the Irish embassy and apply for an Irish work visa. Yes that’s right, in the midst of Ireland’s economic crisis, I am heading to Dublin. My current boss has offered to get in touch with our companies Dublin office to see if there is a position for me, if I am interested. I really do have a great boss right now, but have not yet made the decision if I will take him up on the offer. I still need to fill out the visa application and gather all the appropriate documents.
Purchase a Laptop
While in Canada, I have been using my work laptop. Seeing as though I am quitting my job, I will no longer have it. A replacement is in order.
My Furniture
I deliberately kept the amount of furniture I had in my apartment to the bare minimum. If you walk into my apartment you will see a TV situated on a TV stand, a coffee table and a futon. I also invested in an air bed, for when anyone needed a place to crash (it was actually quite comfortable).
Bottom line is, why pay a lot of money for things you know you will be giving or throwing away in the near future? Having said that, I still need to work out what I’m going to do with everything.
Travel Shots
Although I am heading to Europe, I will eventually make my way to Southeast Asia and so I figured I will get the appropriate vaccinations now. If I am in Europe for so long that I need to get them again, then so be it.
So these are the main things I need to do before I leave, in addition to all the little things. However, just like when I was in University, I do my best work at the last minute.
The clock is ticking…………………

this post made me smile a bit because we are almost on the same boat… i may have done many things on your list but i still have sooo many things to do in just 3 weeks, And what do i do? i write posts about it
i’m 100% sure you’re going to be ok in the end! you probably are great working under deadlines! and good Luck for your upcoming trip to Europe. Cheers
I have learned recently that to-do list makes it much easier to get things done, and more efficiently. Now that you have published it, there’s no return

You are right. The list makes it much more organised and less overwhelming. I still havent started, and I have less than 2 weeks. I’m going to have a busy weekend.
Have fun on your trip! Hopefully you won’t need too many vaccinations
Cheers! Im looking forward to it. No, vaccines are not much fun, but a small price to pay to avoid getting ill.
